Structure of Thriller Openings

There are 3 main types of thriller openings. They are:
  • Narrative: This is when the first part of the film is seen with titles either superimposed or inter cut. An example: PANIC ROOM

  • Discrete: It is when the shots/images/scenes stand apart from the film. It may contain elements from the film that could be indicators to the plot or genre but not part of the narrative. An example: ENEMY OF THE STATE

  • Stand alone titles: This is where there is no imagery or videos with the opening titles. It leads directly into narrative. An example: DONNIE DARKO
