How does your media Product represent particular social groups?

What is representation?

Representation is how something or someone is portrayed in a certain situation. The seven areas of representation are Gender, Age, Social Class, Sexuality, ability/disability, regional identity and Ethnicity. One of the key representations are stereotypes e.g. sixteen year olds are troublesome and moany or all asians own corner shops. Representations is the form of reality as it can be defined for one thing standing for another in the sense of representing it in a different view.

Social Groups

A social group are people sharing a similar social relation.

Age

Age is one of the social groups represented in the film opening of Obsession. A majority of physiological behaviour is linked to age in this case young adults are the main target. Age is also represented through the use of Mise en scene - Props, the main character wears a short navy dress with a ribbon on her hair she also has a bear with her. The use of these props automatically tells us that she is a young disturbed child. The fact that their is a white wall in the background connotes her innocence as well as her mental illness. 

Gender

Gender is also represented in the film,  the use of camera shots e.g. extreme close ups, wide shot, mid shot etc clearly shows that she is a girl. The use of make up juxtaposes with her mental illness as it portrays her femininity whereas the camera shots suggest that she is not 'normal' this is shown through her body language- Facial expressions.

Disability

Disability is another social group, in the film the use of Camera work portrays her mental state/ disability as their was flashing lights.The fact that the room was small and cramped portrays a mental asylum. Also the dark lighting also shows her mental state as she likes being in a dark room, whereas other kids may be afraid of the dark. 

The use of representation of social groups have been represented in a negative aspect as in a majority of phycological films have negative elements to portray a characters mental state. There are positive representation as men are victims in this film and the girl is the murderer which contradicts as men are usually portrayed as the killers and the children as innocent.

Both these videos are  short interviews with the Actor/Actress and casting director. We decided to do a interview as it will help us talk about the different aspects used in the film opening e.g. Genre, Actors, Mise en scene etc.

Soundtrack Pro

Final Cut Pro

In Final Cut Pro we included flashing effects to make it look distorted and disturbing which reflects on the main character's (the girl) behaviour. We also made some shots faster pace to reflect the thriller genre. 

We used Soundtrack Pro to find the sound effects we needed for our film (e.g eerie/dramatic noises) . Once we got the sounds we then imported them to our film using Final Cut Pro. 

Another thing we did was create a Distribution ident. We did this using Motion and added a couple of effects to go with it.

Below are the screen grabs showing how we created the titles and the order they appear in. Like many psychological thrillers we chose to have our titles super imposed as it looks more effective and gets the audience thinking more, similarly to the Se7en titles. We followed the conventional title sequence as we felt it suited our opening. Our real names, along with some that are made up were used in the process as well.

We used a font style that most suited the psychological/horror sub-genre. The font we chose looked distorted, linking back to the girl's behaviour. We used the red colour for our font to connote the blood and killing that happens during the actual film, relating to the horror sub-genre.

Extra Filming

After going back and watching the rough cut again, we decided to do extra filming to make our opening more engaging. Shireen, Larah and Amina did extra filming to get extreme close-ups of the props. Yet again, Quddus wasn't in to film with us! Below are just some pictures we took of the props we are filming. The reason why we did extra filming was because we received feedback saying we should do some of the shots as extreme close-ups to draw in the audience.

The film se7en does follow some of the conventions of a title sequence. The reason why I have said this is because towards the middle of the title sequence for this film they have included another two actors and have put the credit for 'music' before 'costume'. This shows that not every film opening follow the order of what the conventions of a title sequence are suppose to be in.

The conventions of this title sequence has inspired us to create superimposed credits for our film opening, this is so it symbolises the unstable emotional state of the characters. The reason for this is because in a lot of physiological films they have their credits in a spooky type of font this is so it can relate to the genre and attract the audience. 

Feedback for our ROUGH CUT

After creating the rough cut of our thriller film, we got some feedback from other people to see whether or not we have to film again or edit some stuff. Above is a short video we took on the feedback we got for our film's rough cut.

This is the rough cut version of our thriller film - Obsession:

We got feedback from other people in our class and a couple of points that are worth mentioning are that the title framing for a couple of shots is a bit off. Also the music which was put on at the last minute doesn't exactly go with it. Other than that the general feedback for our rough cut was very positive. ENJOY!!!

We just added and placed all our shots that we filmed roughly in order we thought made sense. We added quick titles as it was only a draft. To do this we use the software Final Cut Pro.

We added in sound on Soundtrack Pro just to show that we will be including non-diegtic sound in the actual film.

Day 1 - Filming Process

 This is the first day of the filming process (behind the scenes)!

This is a video of us setting up the equipment for our psychological thriller Obsession. 

 

This is the setting of our film - one of the rooms in our college. We covered the whole setting with white sheets because we had a problem with the other green wall; it destroyed our mise en scene.

These are the main props that we used within our film.

 

This video is about us trying to figure out how to work the lighting. Which includes dimming and focusing the light to maximise effect.
